Where Real Estate Gets Its Dirt

Annie Ives Profiled in Angeleno Magazine

AnnieNews: CEO Annie Ives Profiled in Angeleno Magazine
A fabulous looking Annie Ives was profiled in Angeleno Magazine. She was listed in the “Power Players” section. Annie really has an incredible story. Below is a quote from the profile.

“The MLS (TM) has undergone incredible changes under Ives’ 20-year leadership. In 2002, with her guidance, the company evolved from a full-service site being managed by a software company to a turnkey, fully independent entity with internally developed and wholly owned and operated systems:THEMLSPRO Member Site and TheMLS.com Guest Site.”

I will also add their new product, MLSPLUS, is getting a lot of buzz locally.
Go get ’em Annie!

Can you beat Karl?

I’m not sure if our “Beat Karl” campaign is actually going to help us hype up our booth presence at the REALTORS EXPO & CONVENTION in San Diego this week, but we are sure having fun with the promotion. : )

We created a “walk on” video that will be played right before Karl’s ping pong matches. Enjoy, and please share!

Scoop: Rapattoni to offer separate MLS front end solution

Ralph, Niki and Brian
Ralph, Niki and Brian
To say it’s been a tough year for Rapattoni is a massive understatement. Andy’s ongoing back issues and his unexpected death in April of this year have put a dark cloud of rumors over the company and its future.

But on a recent visit I made to Rapattoni’s company headquarters I found a lot of people who never thought of giving up and are ready to fight. Which makes sense. The company was founded in 1970, 45 years ago, and you don’t last that long without fighting the whole way.

At the center of that fight is Niki Rapattoni. Andy’s co-founder, wife, love of his life. And at an age where she should be enjoying the good life she has decided to push forward and take the company in a new direction for the future.

They are now rolling out Rapattoni Magic-Cloud AMS, a new cloud-based solution for their association management software (AMS) which frees the software from on-site hardware, as well as hosting of the current version of Rapattoni Magic AMS for customers that want to eliminate their in-house hardware. This, along with their Integrated Website Service, Single Sign-On (SSO), and Edge MLS mobile interface for iOS and Android, as well as their brand new corporate website, shows the company has been busy. Niki also gave me a tour of their newly renovated offices.  Ralph Hoover, Rapattoni’s EVP, mentioned that these product decisions were made under Niki’s direction, after Andy’s passing.

But that’s not what caught my attention.

One thing that was also clear to me is that everyone at Rapattoni was in tune with what was happening in the industry. And Upstream was at the top of that discussion. Niki said that the company had a lot of discussions about Project Upstream and what it meant to MLS vendors like Rapattoni. And she said that after a lot of thought they had decided strategically they needed to make a change. That change was to separate the front end of the Rapattoni MLS from the back-end database. This, she said, would give the company flexibility to compete in the future as the landscape of the MLS world changed.

Whoa! This was huge news to me. I know that many MLS providers had been looking for some leadership from MLS vendors regarding this, but none of them that I know of have made the declaration publicly.

This is a huge undertaking. I was really impressed by Brian Tepfer, Rapattoni’s CTO, as he laid out the plan. Of course this will not happen overnight, he was quick to say, but the decision has been made, the work has started, and Rapattoni wants to lead the industry in this new direction.

On my drive back home to Huntington Beach I got to thinking. My stepmother lost my father a few years back, my mother-in-law lost her husband less than two years ago. Both strong women. But as strong as they are I can’t imagine how either of them could go on after such a great loss, to lead a company of over a 100 people and to make sure their families are taken care of. No break. Unimaginable. And yet Niki and her team are doing it.

So if anybody is asking what’s happening at Rapattoni, I would just repeat what Niki said to me as I left, “We’re still here Greg.  And the sky’s the limit.”

errol comeback
Looks like Move, Inc.’s “power play” time is over (Errol is Canadian, so I can’t stop with the hockey references).

Look for an exclusive interview with Brad Inman. It’s posted now.

Also looking forward to see Stefan’s live interview with Errol at the T3 Conference in Las Vegas in a couple of weeks.

Just don’t call it a comeback.

Clareity MLS Executive Workshop highlights 2015

A few things I wanted to highlight about last week’s Clareity MLS Executive Workshop in Scottsdale, AZ last week. First off Gregg and his entire team did an amazing job. The content was fantastic and they managed to keep the conversation above the salacious syndication war between MOVE and Zillow Group narrative that has been floating around.

But, one of my takeaways about the Zillow Vs MOVE thing was how it effects other players, notably Homes.com. Seems like an opportunity for these guys. When I asked Andy Woolley, now Industry Relations at Homes.com. Andy was quick to point out that while they don’t, and won’t possibly ever have as much traffic as ZTR, they were focusing a lot on “quality”. Meaning the “quality” of leads coming through Homes.com. I was sent a screen shot of a ListHub report (from the Houston market) that seemed to prove that out.

Homes.com lead ratio

Yes, I know their total detail views is much smaller, but their lead ratio is crazy good.

HAR .08%
Zillow .06%
realtor.com .03%
Trulia .019%
Homes.com .97%

The other thing was the direct feed count. Check out this slide.

Direct Feed Count

Homes.com has 400 direct feeds from MLS providers. 400 freaking hundred. Zillow Group isn’t even close. Great lead ratio, huge direct feed count, you gotta wonder what that is worth to someone.

On another topic, was the release of the MLS Satisfaction survey. Here’s the results of the “End User Satisfaction.”

MLS Satisfaction Survey

Looking at MLS Vendors with more than 2 customers it appears that Black Knight and FBS still dominate the top two spots above their competition. Kudos to both of them.

Thanks again to Gregg, Matt and the rest of the Clareity team. We are always thrilled to participate. And I hope you enjoyed the Cloud Streams t-shirts. They look great!

Post merger bloodbath at Trulia

Trulia's new president of Trulia, Paul Levine
Trulia’s new president, Paul Levine
Zillow Completes Acquisition of Trulia for $2.5 Billion in Stock; Forms “Zillow Group” Family of Brands

“Paul Levine, previously Trulia’s chief operating officer, has been named president of Trulia, reporting to Rascoff. Pete Flint, co-founder and former CEO of Trulia, has joined the Zillow Group board of directors, as has former Trulia board member Greg Waldorf.”

I think Paul Levine is a great choice. What I’m not convinced about is how long they will keep separate companies. Although, by changing the name to “Zillow Group” it does appear that they might stick with this strategy.

I don’t think it could have gone any other way for Pete. But, after selling his company for multiple billions, he deserves to drop the mic and leave the stage.

“In connection with the close of the acquisition, the companies eliminated approximately 280 positions, primarily in San Francisco and Bellevue, Wash., due primarily to redundancy in the combined company’s sales and administrative organizations. Another 70 positions will be eliminated as of the end of the second quarter, at which time Zillow Group will have approximately 2,000 employees. The approximately 350 affected employees have already been notified.”

As the saying goes, “that’s show business”. I was surprised this happen so fast, but I guess ripping of the bandaid was the best solution. Although Trulia did (does?) have a great company culture. I’m sure these “eliminations” hit the team hard.

Bottom line is that the other shoe has dropped. Zillow Group is now in place. Murdoch is still keeping his cards close to the vest. Grab some popcorn.

Murdoch makes his MOVE.

lord murdoch

Shit just got real.

ListHub, a subsidary of MOVE, Inc now owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp just announced that starting in April they will stop sending listings to Zillow. Now this could just be a lot of saber rattling. But me thinks it might be real.

The topic/idea/theory of ListHub shutting down feeds to Zillow may seem familiar to Vendor Alley readers.

Back at the NAR Midyear meetings I got a chance to interview Steve Berkowitz, then CEO of MOVE. He stated that it would be “batshit crazy” to shut down ListHub to spite realtor.com competitors.

I guess Rupert Murdoch has been called worse. 2015 is starting off with a bang!

Inman News has an excelent post on this story so quit being a cheapskate and get a Select membership already!

W&R Studios gets a facelift

You may have read about a project I’ve been working on to add signage to our offices in Huntington Beach. The signage was installed last week and came out beautiful! One of those rare projects that came out better than I imagined. Thought I would share some of the photos I took of the building. You can click on each photo for a larger image.

Brian de Schepper

BrianBrian de Schepper is leaving CoreLogic. In fact I believe he is leaving the industry. He may have many reasons for that (though, I’m not sure how many). But I wish him well. Brian is what I would consider an O.G. (BTW you know you’re an O.G. if you know what this means: “AT&F”)

He worked at Tarasoft, a real estate software company that was pre-internet. Their app was called Titan. As I remember the story they were talking to an MLS vendor/provider about getting Titan setup with their MLS system and were turned down. On the way back Seain and Brian thought, “how hard can making an MLS system be?” and Matrix was born. When launched Matrix it seemed futuristic to many of the other MLS systems around and combined with Brian’s aggressive sales ethic they began to win some of the largest MLS markets in the country.

CoreLogic bought Tarasoft in late 2011. Looking back I think it might have been one of the smartest acquisitions in the industry. Can you imagine the pickle CoreLogic would be with Fusion being their big market MLS system?

When I ran in to Brian at Mid-year he told me the news about him leaving. I was a bit surprised, I thought he stiled enjoyed the game. But as I thought about it the game has shifted for him (and others), less from winning new accounts to saving accounts and managing system migrations. And “System migrations” doesn’t sound like any fun.

Also at Mid-Year he talked about putting together a Top Ten List. I thought it was a good idea, so here’s Brian deSchepper’s farewell top ten list. My personal favorite is #7 (I still remember being escorted up the stairs).

Brian’s Top Ten

10.  Cancelling return flights in Minnesota, purchasing a couple of cars and “opening ‘em up” back to the west coast – bonus discovery – Montana doesn’t have a speed limit
9.    Victoria MLS shootout ->going to a membership vote and beating the incumbent by 4 votes
8.    Lightning vs. Titan. 90’s battle of the two best agent desktops
7.    Tarasoft party of the ages ->Stingaree Rooftop, San Diego, 2009 NAR
6.    Sleepover at Mosey’s house, when visiting RMLS(MN)
5.   California dreaming – MLSListings -> Jim’s amazing MLS transformation to arguably the most tech savvy MLS in the industry. MRMLS->CAR->CRMLS and the man who became king
4.   CLGX: Great people, and the honor/privilege of working for Da Man ->Ben Graboske
3.   Tokyo -> Lucie Fortier, Jon Green, Dave Garland, a Karaoke bar and a project known as Godzilla
2.   MRIS David Charron
1.   Seain.

Good luck on your future endeavors Brian!

Move Inc Luke GlassI couldn’t be more happier with these promotions. Luke is an excellent fit and will do a great job for MOVE and the industry. It’s also great to see MOVE recognize Celeste. Her promotion is well deserved. Both have a lot of work to do, but nothing worth while is ever easy.Move Inc Celeste Starchild

I’m not as familiar with Michael Kane. What did strike me is the number of products/companies MOVE has under its belt.

Looks like Michael will be in charge of many of these, mostly on the agent/broker facing side. The list itself is pretty long. Seems like some branding thought should be put it to this menagerie.

My congrats to Luke and Celeste!
