CMLS 2021 Conference Recap

Yeah, yeah, I know the CMLS Conference was a couple of weeks ago. But I’ve been pretty busy, so I’m just catching up, and I wanted to make sure I recognized a few folks.

First off, big ‘ole hat tip to Denee and the CMLS board of directors for making the decision of making the event hybrid. I’m sure there was a lot to consider but from my perspective, it was a good decision. Walking down the stairs to the pool area and seeing all the people at the Welcome Reception that first night was good for the soul.

I was also happy to see Kathy Condon inducted into the CMLS Hall of Fame. Kathy has had a great career and has given so much of her time to making this industry a better place.

It was also good to see Brian Donnellan recognized as MLS Executive of the year. Bright MLS has not shied away from tough decisions having to do with the Clear Cooperation Policy and conducting studies on the power of the MLS. I anticipate lots of good things to come.

Congrats to both Kathy and Brian.

Canopy MLS was recognized as a “Champion of the MLS” for its execution of the In the Know Campaign. I think they got the coolest trophy.

And last but not least, Cloud CMA was recognized as “The Business Partner and Vendor Champion of MLS”. We had a really fun time putting this together at Lone Wolf but were still surprised by this recognition.

I only wish the conference was longer (although my liver might not agree with me) so I could spend time with more people. My thanks again to CMLS.

Too soon?

Official Organized Real Estate Vaccination Testing Event. Issues will be discussed. Problems will be solved.

Scheduled: May 5, 2021 at 9:00 PM to May 6, 2021 at 1:00 AM

Location: 600 E E Fremont St, Las Vegas, NV 89101

See you tomorrow at Inman Connect SF

Dan and I will be attending Inman Connect SF starting tomorrow, until Friday. I will be on stage at 4:40PM Tuesday on the “New Kids On The Block” panel (don’t ask) making a special announcement about Cloud CMA. We are super pumped about this announcement and think its one of the most innovative things we’ve done….ever. So stay tuned, and see you is SF!

The W+R Studios Speakeasy

It was great to have the COVE Conference in Huntington Beach. One of the highlights was hosting a party at W+R Studios office. We turned it in to the “W+R Studios Speakeasy”. We made a short video of the event, please enjoy.

My thanks to Diane Ruggiero for letting us tag along with her event.

See you in Austin!

Really excited about seeing and catching up with everyone at CMLS next week!

I’m going to be giving my “Industry Update” again, this year. I’m told it was the highest rated session of CMLS last year in Las Vegas (and the lowest). I’ll be onstage Friday the 15th at 8:50am, Lauren Hansen will be doing an introduction, so don’t go big on Thursday night!

Inman News to ban “unsanctioned parties”

I guess you gotta fight, for your right, to party.

In an email titled “An update on our event policy…” a representative from Inman News laid down some stringent policy changes regarding its event policy in relation to “unsanctioned parties”.

“In a few short months, nearly 4,000 industry professionals will gather in sunny San Francisco for Inman Connect. Each year, companies host dozens of parties and events that surround the conference, taking advantage of having the best of the industry in one place.

We’ve introduced a special sponsorship level for companies who host satellite events at Connect for 30+ people that provides additional visibility to attendees and influencers they hope to connect with, while ensuring that the Connect attendee experience isn’t compromised.

Due to the negative impact that unsanctioned parties have on the conference, we have implemented a more stringent event policy for companies who choose to host events at and around Inman Connect without directly participating in the conference as a sponsor. The policy will be strictly enforced and violations will result in revocation of attendee badges, speaker spots and other sanctions at the sole discretion of Inman.

Emphasis mine.

I would argue that instead of being a “negative impact” or having the event being “compromised” the amount of industry parties being held around the conference is a huge draw.

No doubt Brad and his team have done a great job in putting together a great show, but threats of revoking badges and speaker slots is pretty draconian by any standard. How is having a party any different than having a meeting in the lobby with someone? What’s next? Do they shut down the lobby bar or Starbucks in order to get more people in to the sessions?

I sincerely hope Inman News reconsiders this policy before Inman Connect in San Francisco.
